The most important assets of a business are motivated employees. Business managers should always find ways to motivate their employees because the effect of lack of motivation among employees can be harmful to the business.

 

Here are 6 simple ways to motivate your employees

 

1.       Communicate with your employees and listen 

 

 

 

If you want to find out what motivates employees promote a participatory environment where everyone can express themselves without the fear of being ignored or ridiculed. Personalise your communications and keep your employees free to express their needs.

 

2.       Employee recognition and reward

 

This should be in every manager’s tool kit. Public recognitions will make employees feel valued and that their contributions make differences. Even simple feedback in person or via other communication tools helps employees understand what they are doing right or wrong to develop their knowledge and skills.

 

 

3.       Value individuals as humans

No matter how each employee is performing at current task your value for each employee as a human being should never falter and always be visible. This could be visualized through your words or action.

 

4.       Show your employees the whole picture

 

Giving your employees access to your overall organisation’s mission, vision and direction to make them feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves and their individual job keeps them motivated.

 

5.       Demonstrate trust

 

Through providing sufficient access to information you can help employees feel confident to make thoughtful decisions in their daily activities. Provide guidance but also trust your employees and give them autonomy to make the right decision.

 

6.       Provide incentives

 

 

 

Monetary and other rewards should be given to employees for their well-done jobs. This will give them motivation to do more.

 

However, although money as an incentive is a choice if it is not coupled with other non-monetary incentives, its motivating effects may be short-lived. Studies show that rewards such as letters of commendation and time off from work, praise and personal gestures are more effective and economical than awards of money alone.
